What are the benefits of Lymphatic Compression Pump Therapy?

Compression pump therapy offers an optimised management for managing chronic swelling – such as lymphoedema through:

  • Fast relocation of excess lymph fluid from the limbs into the excretory organs (moving swelling associated with venous insufficiency and lymphoedema away from the swollen area into the gut and bladder to be evacuated).
  • Greatly reducing inflammatory pain – reducing chronic swelling from the limb, reduces the inflammatory response of the body – meaning significantly less pain and discomfort.
  • Improving venous return from the limbs to the heart. Reducing swelling and improving tissue quality allows blood flow to increase which has its own anti-inflammatory effects and likely improves energy levels.
  • Skin integrity. Swelling and chronic inflammation can increase the risk of compromised skin integrity, ulcers and pathogens entering the body through wounds.

What’s Lymphatic Drainage Massage do?

The primary effects of manual lymphatic drainage are to manage lymphatic dysfunction resulting in:

  • Reduced swelling
  • Improved immune functioning
  • Optimised lymph flow

What’s Lymphatic Compression Pump therapy?

Lymphatic compression pump therapy, is a type of lymphatic intervention that involves inflatable cuffs that are “worn” on the swollen limb. These automatic Compression Garments will enclose the swollen arm or leg and move lymph fluid through a process of inflation and deflation in a pulsing manner (it takes approximately 60 seconds to fill or deflate respectively), this creates hydraulic pressure, and results in large quantities of lymph fluid moving.

A typical pump cycle will run for 30 minutes of 1 minute on/off (deflation/inflation).

Combining Lymphatic Massage with Compression Pumps

Pressure pump therapy combined with expert Manual Lymphatic Drainage (professional technique) is an efficient way to move large amounts of lymph fluid and usually provides an obvious reduction in swelling for both Lipoedema and Lymphoedema.

A professional opening the nodes correctly before using the pump, ensures large amounts of fluid are removed with the compression pump.

Compression Therapy provides Superior Management Chronic Inflammatory Conditions such as Lymphoedema and Lipoedema.

What’s Lymphoedema?

Chronic swelling in the body is called lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is a result of dysfunction within the lymphatic system and causes swelling in a limb or other body region. The usual causes of lymphoedema include:

  • Damage to lymph vessels
  • Removal or damaged lymph nodes
  • High blood pressure

At the present time there is NO PERMANENT SOLUTION to lymphoedema – however symptoms can be effectively managed by a qualified lymphatic decongestive drainage practitioner. Early intervention leads to better outcomes.

  • stage I: small nodules, reversible oedema
  • stage II: walnut-sized nodules, reversible or irreversible oedema
  • stage III: disfiguring fat deposits (dimpled pattern), macronodular changes, with accompanying lymphedema

Other symptoms that typically occur in lipoedema include severe pain from swelling and bruising.

  • Complex decongestive lymphatic drainage This will reduce pain and loosen the feeling of tightness in the limbs. Decongestive drainage may also help prevent secondary complications such as skin lesions.
  • Pneumatic compression pump therapy has been shown to reduce tissue volume by approximately 10%.
